Using the RainbowChase App

RainbowChase is the only app available that provides guidance to bring more rainbows into your life.

Dr Steven Businger, Professor in the Department of Atmospheric Sciences at the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST) in the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa (UHM), explains how to use the RainbowChase App to bring more rainbows into your life.

The RainbowChase App is fully functional in Hawai‘i on Kaua‘i, O‘ahu, Maui, and the Island of Hawai‘i; the Western states in the continental US (Arizona, California, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, and Washington); and Okinawa in Japan. We will be expanding on to the rest of the US, followed by Asia and Europe.  RainbowChase may also evolve to provide guidance for viewing other atmospheric optics, such as halos, coronas, and brilliant sunsets.

Finally, don’t overlook the wealth of weather data available on RainbowChase.

Sample RainbowChase screens:

Home iPhone screen shot
Home – your rainbow photos can be chosen to be featured on RainbowChase home gallery.
Chase iPhone screen shot
Chase – provides a map showing locations of rain, sun angle, and rainbow viewing angles in your vicinity, guiding your chase for rainbows. You have the option of viewing the locator logos on a map or on a satellite image; here we are looking on O‘ahu. Pinch and zoom to see more details.
Chase Western US menu iPhone screen shot
Choose your area – Use the target icon in the upper right to chose the map for your rainbow chase in the Hawaiian Islands, Western US, or Okinawa in Japan. This works on all the pages, too. In the example above, we are looking at the menu for the Western continental United States (coverage in more states is coming).
Clouds main screen iPhone screen shot
Clouds – provides animated images of cloud cover and offers a choice between images of cloud top temperature (Infrared), Near IR, Water Vapor, and Visible Light images that provide great resolution. The image pages have controls that allow you to control the speed of the animation, and step forward and backward.

Rain iPhone screen shot
Rain – shows an animation of rain showers in your vicinity from radar. Controls on the page allow you to control the speed of the animation, and step forward and backward. The example above shows rain in California.
Nowcast iPhone screen shot
Nowcast/Forecasts – provides the current and future weather at your location, in this case Honolulu.
Photo screen
Photo – allows you to upload your photos of rainbows to your personal “my gallery.”  If you make the photos from “my gallery,” available to the RainbowChase developers, your photos could be chosen to be featured on the RainbowChase home gallery.  This implies that you have released the photo to the RainbowChase creative commons.
